Do you feel Baldwin wrote his essays with a specific audience in mind? Who do you think he is addressing, if so?
I think he wrote primarily to the White audience, but also to a lesser extent to a Black audience. For me (Black), I hear him saying " Can you believe they actually put that stuff in a movie?!" in an incredulous tone!
Definitely a white audience for educating and a lack audience for understanding..
I think for both. I learned from this but I know from a White point of view and thinking ‘I should have seen this before’. I think a Black person would be thinking what he had to say was obvious.
In my opinion, Baldwin was obviously addressing a white audience. It has always amazed me how racist phrases are repeated while the speakers don’t think they are expressing anything of the sort. The phrases and stereotypes are such a part of our conversations they seem invisible to the speaker but are sharply felt by others. I’ve even seen representations in children’s books showing characters in stereotypical roles. Racism is still a significant part of American culture and will be until the stereotypical phrases and characters fall out of use.
