Do book awards influence whether or not you choose to read a book?
Yes I think a book award recognizes the quality and worthiness of a book; for example I like to see the Edgar Awards among others.
For me - not really.
I rely on reviews and recommendations from bloggers and reviewers.
I pay attention to the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction especially. I’m in the process of making a list of my own of the Pulitzer winners back to its inception in 1918 and then (maybe) trying to read all of them.
Sometimes. When I see recommendations or awards I often will spend 10 minutes downloading samples to my kindle of the entire list to review later. I really enjoy the samples to try out new authors and genres. Some evenings that’s all I read fingers crossed that one will grab me.
The juried book awards appeal to me; however, I’m not keen on recommendations by public/TV people. I pay attention to suggestions by BB members and have lots of scribbled to-read lists on my desk!
I do look at the various longlists of the more well-known awards out of curiosity and on occasion look up a few books which I may or may not read.
I read the lists, of course, but am more often than not puzzled by the books they pick. They were right on the money with The Prophet Song, however. That book still haunts me!
No I pay attention to which books win but that is not a reason to read a book .
Not at all. I’d rather hear what readers like myself recommend.
I do not read most Booker Prize winners. They do not seem to reward the books I enjoy. Their are some exceptions.
I do look at the agatha awards when I am looking for a new mystery seriies.
I almost always have heard of the books on the awards lists, but they might not have been on my personal radar to read. Garnering an award almost always bumps a book up on my priority list. For example, I’ll be starting The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny soon - a book I might not have chosen if it hadn’t made it to the Booker longlist.
Yes and no! I have found some awards help but they aren’t always a good fit for me. I read a Booker award and few years ago about slavery and it was an incredibly impactful book! Sometimes these winners are under the radar.
Yes, I definitely take notice and have read some winners because of the recognition. Some favs were The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida and Orbital. Not so impressed by Time Shelter.
Yes, I always look for award winners.
I might check the lists, but awards don’t affect whether I read a book or not. I’m more likely to choose by authors or genres.
I look at the award lists for possible reads, but the book description has to appeal to me. Just because the book is on a certain list is not a reason for me to read it. I do find that I seem to read more Pulitzer winner than other awards.
Not always- some of the winners are real disappointments. But then you get the ones that hit the mark. The first time I read a Booker( back in th 90’s) winner I was enthralled with the book so I always look at the Booker lists.
Such a fantastic book!
Yes, because I may not have hear about them otherwise.
