I agree with you Kim - I can’t say it was uplifting as things turned out well in the end for James but this was a one-off, not any type of solution for the broader problem of mass incarceration and inequitable sentencing etc. I can’t say it was uplifting but if it is true that there is way that some prisoners do manage to survive the way James did - keep your head down, etc. then I did feel at least a tiny bit better - that maybe its not 100% that prisoners are subject to terrible violence while in prison, but that is a really low bar.
Kim.kovacs, I am right there with you. I found the book troublesome and thought provoking.
I found the book to be uplifting. The first half really developed the characters and the situations they ate coming from, whereas the last half showed that there is mercy in the world.
I found it to be uplifting.
I found the novel uplifting in spite of a crime committed. The characters always seemed to find others that helped them in some way. For example, when James lost his mother, Flo gives comfort to James and some sound adive.
I found it uplifting. Even in the parts of James life where things were dark and difficult, he still had hope in his heart and the love he had for his mom and dad and Spike, made me happy for him.
There was a mix in this book, as there is in real life. You don’t appreciate the sun, until it follows a cloudy day.
