Consider the relationship between Emilie and Caleb. Did his revelation startle you? Why or why not?
Yes, I was startled by this relationship. I certainly thought he was much younger than Emile. I also think Caleb saw how she was mistreated and he wanted to take care of her. I am not sure it was a true love on his part, but more as a protector and he was now alone. As far as Emile is concerned I think at this particular moment she needed someone gentle in her life.
It did surprise me as he was so much younger. After her two horrible relationships he would be the perfect person for her. I am sorry she felt like she must leave and move to Texas. I do understand her reason.
I wasn’t surprised at all. His actions for some time seemed much more than just protective, and I think the age difference wasn’t relevant. But Emilie had been thoroughly abused in her previous marriages and believed she was just fine on her own. She had made bad choices in marriage so she was truly skittish. She already trusted Caleb, but he would have to court her gently and over time for her to trust the institution. I did see her affection for Caleb, so my optimism thinks he eventually joined her.
I agree with you @Donna_M. I feel like the author was dropping hints from the time they first me that they would eventually end up together in some way.
I wasn’t startled by his revelation, but I thought that Emilie may have thought of him more as a brother. He was very kind and protective. Also considering how well they worked together and their common interests, they might be a good match.
