Children view the world differently than adults. They place an importance on different things and interpret situations differently. In which moments do you get a sense that Anya is seeing a different world than the adults around her?
Good question. I think where Anya came from and to where she went to were two diametrically different worlds. So she was always questioning why were they so different. Since the other characters had no sense of the world where Anya came from, they could not help explain differences.

I felt like Anya had had such a different life from anyone else. All she had known was the ultra-controlled life in the bush. From my first introduction to Anya, it seemed like she was seeing a completely different world from anyone. The adults around her in the bush at least had some experience with another way of life. I was so glad that Anya could come into a “normal” world. But it did not seem like it would be an easy transition.

Anya is a very complex character, and it is very hard for the reader to understand her since Anya sees the world from a different angle. Anya has heard only the thoughts and beliefs of the adults around her, and that’s where she puts her trust.
Anya will always remember and “exist” in both worlds. Fortunately, she has Effie and others to guide her journey.
The negative injunctions she’s been taught rule her living. For Anya carrying the injunction ‘not to talk to these people’, has become a rule of silence cutting her off from the help she needs. She’s been carefully taught to distrust the adults she meets outside the bush, and she holds to this as the only way to live. She firmly believes the only safety will be finding her mother, and she can’t trust anyone to help her. Walking back through the bush, she seems to believe that Effie experiences a panic attack because she has disrespected the Guardian.
Anya sees things much differently than anyone who recused her does. Her world had been very different up to then and her only basis for visualizing the world would have come from that upbringing.
