Who’s in?
I must have been mistaken. I thought there was already a group discussion of Catcher in the Rye at the beginning of September. I am currently reading the book. At the same time I have been reading THE CATCHER IN THE RYE; A Cultural History by Josef Benson. It explains the book’s effect on each decade and generation. It has added an interesting insight of the book.
Hey, @Lynne_G, yeah, a couple of us were talking about doing a side read, but we agreed to start reading on September 1. Feel free to add your comments here, if you’d like. I wasn’t aware of the Benson book; it sounds fascinating, and I’m looking forward to hearing what you’ve gleaned from it.
Have you read Catcher in the Rye before? I somehow managed to avoid it when I was a student. It’s funny, I read ALL the time, but for some reason I avoided the books I was supposed to be reading for class. I consequently missed a lot of YA classics, like Lord of the Flies and Flowers for Algernon.
Yes, I read CITR my junior year in high school (68). I still have my very worn paperback but I downloaded an ebook version. I have to admit I have a different perspective in my 70’s than at 16.
I have enjoyed Benson’s profile of the public reaction in each decade after the book was published.
Actually, I am currently in a reading slump due to ongoing health issues that have intensified probably caused by the intense heat zone. I am impatiently waiting for them to pass.—especially the paralyzing migraines.
I am on schedule with W&P and check website each day,
Take care.
I just caught up with this…I’ve put in my library request and I’ll be ready as soon as I’m notified for pick up. Read it so many years ago I don’t remember anything outside of the fact that it was controversial.
