Bulkley wanted to sail up South America’s west coast to Brazil, while Cheap wanted to stick with his original orders and attempt to rendezvous with Admiral Anson at Chiloé along the east coast. Whose plan do you think stood a better chance of success? Which group do you think you would have joined?
Well as it turned out, Bulkley was successful and Cheap wasn’t so I guess Bulkley. Neither inspired great confidence in me however.
I’m pretty sure I would have gone with Buckley as his pkan made more sense. I do not think I would have trusted Cheap at all especially after went into a rage and killed cousins instead of holding him for questioning to get all the facts. Tgat being said, I probably wouldn’t have been greatly inspired by Buckley either, so it would have been a “better of the the worst “ decision
Being someone who is not particularly great at following blind orders (particularly in such an extreme circumstance) I would have leaned toward Bulkley. He, at least, had the book outlining the way through the Straits of Magellan. Cheat’s plan was pretty much proved improvident, without the help of the native inhabitants, they would not have escaped.
Bulkeley’s plan seemed the most sane one. However, Cheap was “hell-bent” in making the rendezvous with Admiral Anson according to the pre-planned schedule. He ignored recommendations from Bulkeley. I definitely would have chosen Bulkeley’s group. Bulkeley knew about the sea and the condition of the ship.
