Welcome to the BookBrowse Reading Challenge, July - December 2026 edition.

The goal is to read a book that fits each topic below by December 1. Everyone who completes the challenge will be entered to win a BookBrowse t-shirt (20 available, and if more than 20 readers qualify we’ll have a random drawing). Please note, this is not a competition, merely a fun way to interact with other BookBrowse members.

To get started, click here to copy a template with the tasks, then click “Reply,” then paste in your tasks. You can then edit this page repeatedly to help you track and plan which books you want to use for each task. If you’re not already a BookBrowse member, you can sign up here.

Here are the rules:

  • You can only count a book once (e.g., you can’t use War and Peace for both the pre-1950 book and the book in translation).
  • Books must be started and finished within the challenge period.
  • Audiobooks count.
  • Re-reads are OK.

To be eligible for the t-shirt drawing:

  • You can join the challenge at any time, but you must complete all tasks by December 1.
  • You must post about the book on the Community Forum.
  • You must add the book to your BookBrowse Online Reading List

How to post your books on bookbrowse.com:

  • Log in to bookbrowse.com.
  • Click Members - My Reading List.
  • Type the name of the book in the Search box & hit the Search button. (Hint: If the book doesn’t show up, try the ISBN number.)
  • Change the dropdown to the correct status (Currently Reading or Have Read) and click the Add button.

Once you’ve read the book, you can return to the My Reading List, find the book, and click Edit to fill in any stats you’d like. You can also write a review here, which you can keep for just for your own use or publish to BookBrowse for your fellow members to peruse.

Stuck on ideas for books? BookBrowse.com can be a great resource. In the individual task threads below I’ve included links (e.g.,I included a link to BookBrowse’s list of major book awards and the books that one them in the “Read a book that’s won a major award” task). You can also ask for help in the topic-specific threads (for example, in the "Read a book recommended by another BookBrowse member, you might ask for suggestions).

My question is are the members able to read the same book in the same topic another member has already chosen?

To clarify the translation task - the book must have been written in a non-English language and translated into English.

What is the challenge’s official start date? Does the book need to be started on or after the challenge start date to count? Or can it have been started before the challenge start date as long as it’s finished after the challenge start date and before the challenge end date? I’m thinking War and Peace.

Hi @Lana_Maskus! Thanks for asking.

The official Challenge start date is Friday, July 24, and you’re correct that books you’ve started reading before that date don’t count toward the Challenge. All books have to be started and completed in the Challenge window (7/24-12/1).

Must the books read need to be ones found in the BookBrowse database or can they also be ones found via the internet search link in BookBrowse?
