Barbie has had more than 200 careers, from fashion model to astronaut. What do you think were the most important milestones for Barbie, and how was she ahead of her time? If you played with Barbie dolls as a child, were there specific models or outfits that you remembered owning?
I loved Barbie as a nurse, stewardess, astronaut (ahead of the moon landing), business woman, soldier, teacher. I had all the possibilities as did my youngest daughter. I loved it when in the eighties Barbie became a doctor, vet, and a pilot!
I played with Barbie in the 1960s, and I don’t remember Barbie’s careers being important to me at that time, if she even had any then. I enjoyed her outfits and also desperately wanted a Dream House. My daughter was never really into dolls, and she ignored the only Barbie she ever had and played board games instead.
My mom was unusual for her time as she had a full time professional job. I was drawn to the business woman Barbie, it was as if made my mom “cool.”
Funny, my friend had a Barbie dream house and we played with it for hours. I never noticed that there was no kitchen! I was shocked when I read that in the book…weird we never noticed or talked about it. The designers were right we wanted the clothes and the flashy life…not what our moms did of cooking!
When I played with Barbie, there were no careers. I love her careers like nurse and firefighter.
