Azrian’s death from AIDS changes Birdie’s life. She retires shortly after and spends a lot of time volunteering and donates a large sum of money to AIDS-related causes. Why do you suppose she took this course of action at this point in her life?

Adrian was really Birdie’s friend and he believed in her and saw her uniqueness. I think his getting sick and dying opened Birdie’s heart and that’s why she got so involved in helping others.

The AIDS crisis and particularly Adrian’s death pulled Birdie out of her excessive focus on herself and showed her the value of an outward focus. It give her life meaning beyond her very narrow focus on herself and her career.

Azrian was the first one she viewed as a friend beyond modeling. She became very aware of the vast number of hair dressers, make up artists, designer wannabes and others in the modeling and video businesses who were dealing with and/or dying from Aids.

Birdie was lost at that point in her life, she had no direction. She stumbled into the AIDS programs as she had nothing else in her life to focus on. Having Azrian die & the awareness of so many other artists that were dying from AIDS ,allowed her to run from herself & hide behind the idea of helping others.

Azrian was very important to Birdie and she wanted to honor him.

Azrian was almost a father figure to her. He really cared about her and not just what she could do for him. I think for her, it was a way of helping him; even though he had passed away.
