The books of two award-winning New Zealand authors have been disqualified from consideration for the country’s top literature prize because artificial intelligence was used in the creation of their cover designs.
It does seem unfortunate that the stories weren’t considered since that is the purpose of the award. It’s not unusual for authors to have no say in the cover design, yet they’re being penalized. The world is entering new territory with AI, and we’re going to encounter issues that humans need to decide.
I get that there are rules, but as you mention, @NanK, it’s likely not the author’s fault the covers were AI-generated, and that certainly doesn’t reflect at all on the quality of the book. I really feel for the authors effected.
