At what points did the characters feel that they were where they belonged, & what threatened this for them? Has your sense of “I’m right where I belong” ever been similarly threatened or taken from you? How did you recover it, or how did you adapt?

At one point in their lives, they all felt at home and comfortable in their lifestyles. Each one had extenuating circumstances that threatened their comfort zone. They were forced to adapt with the help of the three main characters. When my husband received a promotion, and we mutually decided to relocate to another city, I quit my job, moved to another city, and found employment in a similar field. It was difficult to find new friends and to adapt to a new area.

Elwood’s death threatened June’s belief that she was at home in his house and desire to stay there for the rest of her life.

Melanie had already lost her sense that she was where she belonged. She enjoyed that following the success of the first movie in which she had a leading role, but it was ripped away from her when she was blacklisted. She was trying to get that security in her career back.

Eva hasn’t had the security of feeling she’s where she belongs since she was forced to flee her home during WWII. She’s been roaming since, looking for permanence and happiness.

There have been a couple of occasions when I knew I was where I belonged but it didn’t last. In particular, I had my dream job for several years, before management changed. The new Director was a terrible person and ineffective leader, so I reluctantly left, but guess what? I like my NEW job even better and stayed there until I retired. Life is always transitory and we have to be flexible, willing to pivot.
