At Rennie’s Mill, the girls’ friend Biao-Wu turns down a “golden ticket” to Taiwan, opting to stay in Hong Kong instead. Do you think he made the right decision? Why or why not?
Yes, I think he made the right decision. He likely would have had more opportunities under British rule. Even though Taiwan wasn’t communistic, there still would have been societal rules that could have affected his future.
There were no right or wrong decisions. Survival was the goal. I would not judge.
He made the decision and was satisfied that it was the right one. Good enough for me.
For Biao-Wu this was the right decision. He decided to stay in a place he knew about and was comfortable. He was turned away from going to Taiwan earlier due to his amputated leg. He did find work in Hong Kong and had friends. He wanted to remain in Hong Kong so he could go back to his home and find his mom.
Biao-Wu is not interested in returning to the Nationalists at that time. Just because he
didn’t make it on his first try doesn’t mean that he won’t succeed in the future. Hong Kong is going to be his home. He plans to learn Cantonese in time. And maybe he can return and find his mom once things are better in the mainland.
Mr Han told him thousands would kill to get a ticket out. Biao-Wi told Mr Han, “People don’t need to kill anyone to be in my position. They just need to cut off their own leg." Biao-Wu was not ready to take the risk yet.
Yes I think he made the right decision since he’d been sent back once and he knew people in Hong Kong. He also wanted to find his mother and he’d be closer in Hong Kong.
How could we ever know if he made the right decision? the important thing is Biao-Wu seemed happy with his decision and was committed to making it work. In war, you never know what could or couldn’t happen. I admire him for his commitment to the path he felt was right for him.
I guess I was surprised, but totally understood why he made the choice.
