At one point in the monastery, Tullia tells Anatole that she fears Pito has fallen in love with her (p. 227). Has he? Or is it wishful thinking on her part? When do you think Pito and Tullia truly developed feelings again for each other?
I think Tullia does hope Pita is in love with her again. When she mentions his “natural urges” her “blue eye sparkled”. I believe Pito does love her. Their adventures after leaving the castle probably contributed to finding these new feelings for each other.
I don’t feel Pito ever fell out of love for Tullia. He was smart and knew he needed to let it go for both of their good within the castle. I question whether Anatole’s potion did the job or if Pito was smart to see the writing on the wall.
Carol_N, I agree, I think Pito always loved her but he also understood their positions in this world. Their travels together deepened his feelings.
I think at first it was a wishful thinking on her part, or maybe just her misunderstanding his good nature in general. I think once they got to know each other through spending so much time together, the true attraction was able to develop between them.
I agree that he always loved her and I also think she was disguising her feelings as well. This suggests that the ‘magic’ potion never really worked at all and tracks with Anatoles bumbling character.
