I just read that Holden Caulfield is turning 75 this year, and like many in my age cohort I remember reading the Catcher in the Rye many years ago, but haven’t picked it up since I was a teenager. Does BB have any plans for a discussion of Catcher in the Rye? If not are there folks who are planning on reading it for the second time (or even the first time)?

Sounds great! Should we set an arbitrary start date of 9/1? Too bad it was published in 1951 - just a couple of years too late to fit the “before 1950” challenge task.

I reread it a couple years ago. It’s a different story now that I’m in my 70s. Still worthwhile.

I read that it was serialized in 1945 and then published.

Oh Kim you should definitely read this book. It was THE book to read when I was a junior in high school. I reread it four years ago and I think it meant more to me later. It brought make many frustrations I had in high school. My father was a high ranking navel officer and oh how I remember that you wore your father’s rank. I was supposed to be polite to one’s that wore a higher rank but I refused. I wanted to be friends who had a father. on my father’s staff but he had an enlisted rank in and she avoided me like I had the plague. Different from Holden I went to the schools where we lived, however we moved every two years. I attended 3 different high schools.
Just like Holden I thought it was all BS. Yes, the book was published in 1951. and Holden and I are the same age. The difference I was a good girl and didn’t revolt however I kept the frustration inside of me which led to a difficult relationship with my father. Thankfully I think the hierarchy has changed since the 60’s
I know I am rambling but there were so many other formalities I could reminisce about. (I didn’t want to delete the whole message I originally sent to you). I think this heat is destroying my brain)

I would love to participate and was hoping I was able to add to my list of 10 books to read.
Unfortunately which does surprise me Catcher In The Rye did not win any literary awards and it was published in 1951. Thankfully after googling the book it was translated in many other languages.
I plan to add CAITR under that topic in the Challenge !

Unfortunately, you can’t use CITR for the translation book. The idea is to read a book that wasn’t originally written in English. Since this one was written in English, it doesn’t work. Sorry! I’ll need to clarify that in the topic.

Well it really doesn’t fit in any of the other topics because it wasn’t recommended by another member and it wasn’t featured in a review.
Oh well I will just tell my husband we will probably have to order more carry outs for dinner this next month!
