Hi All, If you have never heard of it and you are interested in diverse books check out the Anisfield Wolf Awards. They have announced this year’s winners, and Colored Television is included. The exciting part is that each year the award ceremony includes a percentage of free tickets. I plan on going because of this book. Did you all read it? It is dark satire, which is not for everyone.
Thanks, Dee! I’ve never heard of this award - and it’s been going on for 88 years! The website says it’s “The only juried American book prize focusing on works that address racism and diversity.”
The full list of winners:
-
Fiction: Colored Television by Danzy Senna
-
Nonfiction: The United States Governed By Six Hundred Thousand Despots: A True Story of Slavery; A Rediscovered Narrative, with a Full Biography by John Swanson Jacobs, edited by Jonathan D. S. Schroeder
-
Memoir: Feeding Ghosts by Tessa Hulls
-
Poetry: Yard Show by Janice N. Harrington
Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa will also receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his profound impact on American literature. Known for his lyrical explorations of war, memory, and race, Komunyakaa has shaped contemporary poetry with a voice that is both unflinching and deeply evocative.
I’ve not heard of this award, but I’m going to pay attention from now on. I’m not familiar with Colored Television. Going to get more information now.
Thanks so much for sharing the information about this award. Just looked up Colored Television and added it my TBR list.
The award is new to me but I recommended Colored Television to many. It is dark satire that is often hilarious, poignant and a great story. Any award it wins is well deserved
Thanks Everyone for being open. I think because the award is in Cleveland (instead of very large markets like NY or LA) it remains unknown, but it is amazing. For example, Percival Everett, who is everywhere now, received it for Trees, written before Erasure and James. They truly highlight those that are coming up. If someone is interested in diverse authors, it is an award to watch.
I ordered and received Feeding Ghosts last week. Haven’t started it yet.
