Adelaide Watson arrives as a fairy godmother character in Emily’s and Dorothy’s lives, renewing their sense of hope and purpose when they feel lost. What were your thoughts on Adelaide and her impact on the other characters’ lives? Do you have a similar person in your own life?
Wasn’t she just magic? I loved Adelaide and the energy she brought to the women in Liberal. Now we can see great women from afar, but at that time that would have been a challenge. Sure, read about them in newspapers or maybe hear a radio report, but that hits differently. Of course, there also weren’t many women who so publicly ran afoul of societal dictation. I was thrilled for the women in the book that they had a chance to see they could be more than just prairie wives, if that’s what they wanted.
I loved Adelaide, she would have been a great friend to have. She realized Emily needed to talk to someone and offered to listen. I think everyone needs an Adelaide in your life.
It was nice to see the character of Adelaide as she brought so much distraction to the people of the area and hope for all. She was especially helpful to Emily in encouraging her to make a new life and realize that the place was not her happiness but the people in it.
I loved her character. She was full of life, and she brought a strong woman into their lives. Everyone needs a friend like her to lift you up and point out your strengths. I’m very lucky because I have more than one person like that in my life.
Adelaide was the embodiment of “somewhere over the rainbow”. She literally flies and metaphorically gives Dorothy and Emily for that matter, the will to continue dreaming, planning and hoping for a better tomorrow.
Very well said, @Judith_L! Glad you’ve joined BookBrowse and looking forward to reading more of your comments.
Entering the conversation late but I loved Adelaide. She brought new positive light and renewed energy at just the right time to Emily and Dorothy. Calling her a fairy godmother is a perfect description! I was sad to see her go but I think she felt that her job was done.
