Absolute top of my list:
This is Happiness by Niall Willams

Others I loved:
The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner
Chain Gang All-Stars by
Heart the Lover by Lily King
Partially Devoured by Daniel Kraus

(I suspect The Flower Sisters by Michelle Collins Anderson will make the list for the next quarter, but I just finished that one last night, so that one’s Q2.)

I’ve got several others that I liked a lot but I had to draw the line somewhere…

Thanks for sharing @kim.kovacs It’s nice to see those backlist books taking the spotlight. It’s too easy to forget the ones that pass us by.

I’m glad to see The Young Will Remember show up on your list, @Gabi_J. I thought that was a great book and I hope it gets in the hands of more readers.

Family of Spies is on my wish list. Glad to hear it’s a good one.

Thanks for sharing your list @Marie_Webb I’m particularly interested in Mother Mary Comes to Me. I’ve heard so much good about it. I need to add it to my list at some point.

Yes. The book tells a story of the author’s life that I would never have imagined. And the writing is beautiful! Thanks for your response.

I have read and enjoyed five on your list so I am making note of the others! I haven’t read *Half of a Yellow Sunā€ but really liked the author’s We Should All Be Feminists (I gifted copies to friends and their daughters) and Dear Ijeawele. So, this book will go first on the list. Thanks for sharing.

What a great list Anne. Thanks for posting!

I got off to a slow start this year because of reading a long book, but so far here are my faves:

The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny - Kieran Desai

The Bridge on San Luis Rey - Thornton Wilder (I picked up this old classic and loved it—some of the most beautiful sentences ever written.)

Audition - Katie Kitamura

I Medusa - Ayana Gray (I love these re-telling of myths)

Thanks @Roberta_Winchester . I’ll be reading Sonia and Sunny with my book club in a couple of months. I’m happy to see it’s made your best-of list. The same book club just last month discussed Audition. It was so fun learning how everyone interpreted it. I much prefer Intimacies by Kitamura which my book club discussed a few years back.

Good to know Anne. I’ll put Intimacies on my TBR list. I thought Audition was so unusual and there was so much to think about. There are quite a few interviews on YouTube with Kitamura and I found them helpful. She also struck me as a most gracious person.

My first quarter besties are:

Heartwood by Amity Gaige , then I read her Sea Wife which has really stuck with me.

Son of Nobody by Yann Martel (which I received thru BB First Impressions TYVM)

Wow you read a lot! The only one of yours I’ve read is Becoming Madam Secretary which all of my book club loved for learning about Frances and all her historic contributions.

I’ve wondered about Son of Nobody, @Connie_K . Glad to hear it was good! Another one for the wish list!

Intimacies is equally intriguing but a little more unpackable, if that makes sense. I did read it three times and like you, listened to numerous interviews to try to find the key to unlocking it. My book clubbers still talk about it.

Thanks for sharing your besties @Connie_K. I’m sort of ambivalent about whether or not to read the new Martel. It’s great to see you enjoyed it.

What We Can Know by Ian McEwan was my fave so far!
