Which genre(s) do you avoid reading?

Me too on avoiding romance. :grinning:

The only genre I don’t really like is romance

Felt the same way about Fifty Shades of Gray. It was so poorly written that it was a quick DNF for me. Mind-boggling that the series was so popular.

Same here for not liking science fiction, fantasy, or dystopian novels.

Historical fiction is my favorite genre.

The book genre I steer clear of the most is straightforward nonfiction outlining a topic because I would mostly rather research it myself through shorter-form material. If there’s any particular interesting angle, like something more creative or personal, or if it covers a very narrow subject that I’m not likely to find the same information on elsewhere, that increases the appeal a lot, but I generally read books more for the writing and presentation than information.

Romance, sci-fi, fantasy, and self-help are all genres I avoid like the plague.

I do not read romance novels. I find most fantasy useless but love science fiction.

I have started looking into many graphic novels and children’s books.

I don’t usually science fiction unless the book was recommended. Definitely horror.

I avoid short stories, romance novels and horror novels.

Same with me! To Viqui’s list I would add most Science Fiction, and also detective stories with obvious gratuitous violence.

I mostly avoid Romance and Short Stories.

I’m very selective about Horror and Science Fiction but I will read some.

I don’t read as many mysteries as I once did and I try to steer clear of Procedurals.

I question reading a lot of Memoirs because to me they feel too personal and revealing. I realize they have been published in spite of my objections but I don’t particularly enjoy them unless there is some specific relevance like social justice or historical significance.

Totally agree with you on Memoirs, Anne. I read one not that long ago that was by a guy who grew up with an epileptic brother. I finished it & wasn’t sure why I should care. I’d just about given up on the genre when I read My Good Bright Wolf, which was actually brilliant. Not only did it make the author’s struggles real to me, and relevant, but it was wonderfully written. So it just kinda depends.

Agree wholeheartedly with your avoidance of the woman walking away book cover. It is used too often and I find it uninspiring.

Horror, dystopia, end of the world as we know it (do I have to quote that?). I like some si-fi and really good mysteries. No romance and few comical books.

Self help and historic biographies that are hundreds of pages long.

Fantasy is not my cup of tea, although I know this genre has gained popularity in recent years. I am also not a fan of science fiction.

I generally do not read Romance, but can make an exception for a sprawling good Gothic romance. I do not care for most speculative fiction, and can’t abide gratuitous horror, or dystopian. I have also stopped reading detective/mystery titles that utilize the worn-thin, unimaginative theme of woman-as-victim-of-violence.

Strickly ROMANCE is avoided all together. Baby steps in these other genres…
The main book club I’ve been in for over 30 years sticks mostly to fiction, but as we branch out, we have found some SCI FI quite engaging - I’m thinking Klara and the Sun, and Hail Mary. We are finding FANTASY a bit of a bumpy road, The Lost Bookshop. We really enjoyed learning some SCIENCE with Hope Jahren’s Lab Girl. And BIOGRAPHY about women especially, The Only Woman in the Room. I hope I’m categorizing correctly on those.
