What role did books play in the characters’ lives? Who do you think was affected by them and in what way?
Books were very important to Catherine. Not so much for Michael though he kept the book he gave her - out of love.
Books were treasured by most and played an important role in the characters’ development and lives. I thought the inclusion of Cat’s discussions (letters or otherwise) with famous authors – Melville and Walt Whitman – was a bit contrived.
Again I agree with @Janine_S and @Catherine_S. Catherine had a high esteem for books especially because of her love of teaching.
I enjoyed the focus on books. Catherine was always trying to pass nooks to others. Her relationship with Jane developed through her reading and I loved that one of her future goals was to have a full bookshelf. One of Cath’s favorite memories wad reading to Delphina. The references to Melville’s Moby Dick and inclusion of Walt Whitman’s poetry was a nice touch.
Books and learning were so important to Catherine. I wish she had been able to have spent her like teaching literature, like I did!
