What do you think the book has to say about loyalty and friendship between women?
The book supports the friendships forged between unlikely friends. These ladies were essentially thrown together by Mary and her needs. They were wonderful to each other, perhaps unrealistically so, but it was nice to read. I think of modeling as a cutthroat world but these ladies made it work. When I read that Fern signed Twiggy’s name for a fan, I couldn’t help but think how angry Twiggy might have been had she known, especially in today’s world. They were very loyal to each other and it was nice to see their relationships come together.
Its said a lot, especially since all of the books or movies covering the life of a model are now just the opposite. Extreme jealousy, faded careers, and how getting older in this field are just a few of the negative experiences shown in our modern day films and television shows. Aging models depend on face lifts, false padding, hairpieces, etc to try and stay current..
I felt like the women were very loyal to each other and helped each other out as needed. There didn’t seem to be any competition or jealousy. It was very refreshing to read and hopefully was true.

I think women’s friendships can be enduring and very impactful. Many women i know have friendfiendships that have endured and strengthened over many years – 50 plus years.
I think at times Chrissy felt like Mary didn’t value her as much as she would have liked. However, she remained loyal.

It made me feel the special quality of friendship between women, that I grew up with. This book reminded me that there can be ups and downs, but good friends can cycle through. Too often now, it seems people just blow up over meaningless things and friendships suffer.
The friendships between the women was incredible. They seemed to care about each other & helped each other out.
Mary Quaint was very loyal to the women who worked for her.
As with the other replies I think there was unusually loyal friendly relationship between the women. I have heard that there can be some competitive differences when a group of women work together.
I think that friendship has always been important to women. Part of the reasons for Mary’s successes were the friendships that she nurtured throughout her life.
I value my female friendships, and I know that they have helped me to celebrate and also support me in tough times. I do believe it is possible for the friendships we saw in the book. But I also have seen women being disloyal and unfair to other women, thinking it was the only way to be successful.
I also value my female friendships. But I am not in competition with any of them as the models were in this book. I think that might be a difference. As in life, some people were supportive, and others forgot their friends as they became busier with thier own lives.
