I agree . It reminded me of Lisa See’s books. I also thought of Peach Blossom Spring by Melissa Fu. I think most any book club would enjoy this book and it would offer a variety of discussion topics.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Chinese history and status/plight of women during the years of WWII - Communist take over from the Nationalists.
I recommend this book for anyone who reads historical fiction as well as those who know little of China’s history. I also recommend Wild Swans by Jung Chang for its portrayal of the power of generations in an individual’s life. An earlier book club loved the book.
ANyone who enjoyed Daughters of Shandong may also appreciate Homeseeking by Karissa Chen. It is also historical fiction dealing with the cultural revolution in China, It is also a story of two people who fell in love as teenagers in China but were separated due to the war. Their stories cover the sixty years between their separation and their chance meeting in the United States and what follows…
I think anyone with an interest in Asian history and trying to understand Taiwan/China relations might be interested. Re: recommendations of fiction about Asian women my first suggestions are Amy Tan and Lisa See, both of whom are far better writers and story tellers than this author.
For those interested in Historical Fiction, particularly for those who are interested in learning about China after WWII.
Yes, Vicki_C! I also read Lady Tan’s Circle or Women and saw so many similarities. But these events were set 400 years apart and it seemed that not much had changed in those 400 years as far as how women and daughters were treated! Our book club loved Lady Tan’s Circle of Women and I am certain they would love Daughters of Shandong as well.
I agree with Elizabeth and i plan to recommend yhis book to my book clubs.
