Try her (Keegan) story about foster care-”Foster”. Both have also been made into movies.
I’m also reading John Boyne’s book for our book club. This story is keeping me awake at night and really haunting me! It’s a devastating story.
I’ve heard excellent things about The Elements! Thank you for giving it another vote of confidence.
Ii just finished “The Elements by John Boyle and loved it. Also did a close read with Haley Larsen on Substack and read “The Custom of the Country” by Edith Wharton-so clever and enjoyable. Currently reading “Old Filth” by Jane Gardam. I saw it recommended somewhere and so glad I decided to read it. It’s the story of a man born in Malaysia during the Raj. It’s just great so far- didn’t want to do anything but read today—-although that seems to happen a lot!
I’m reading Buckeye and liking it, but having trouble finding time to read. I had knee replacement a couple weeks ago and seem to be doing more napping than reading. Still reading every day just not as much.
Sorry about your knee, @Melinda_J! I hope you recover quickly.
That’s exactly what I was saying about missing the heart in King of Ashes. No one to really root for—a bunch of really flawed characters.
Still Life by Sarah Winman is a ling-time favorite of mine. I’d love to hear what you think of it, @Maureen_Connolly .
Intriguing comment for The Elements. I bought this recently so maybe I’ll grab it off the shelf soon
Did you know there is a movie of Small Things Like These? It’s very well done and true to the story.
I see @Jorene_J has already mentioned the movie(s). I second her recommendation.
I loved it Anne. I loved how the characters became a family. I thought it was a compelling story. I learned about the flood that I knew nothing about. I need to go back to Florence to revisit all the beautiful places.
Melinda, I remember my recovery was the same. Good intentions since I had doctor orders to rest the knee, elevate, etc. Great, I’ll catch up on reading. Seems I caught up more on napping. It takes awhile to mend.
I’m just finished Dust Child by Nguyen Phan Que Mai on audio, which I very much enjoyed. And for a physical book I’m reading What Kind of Paradise by Janelle Brown. I’m loving it and suspect it will be one of my favorite books of the year.
Jolene, My favorite John Boyne so far is The Absolutist. A brilliant character study. So I would recommend that to you. None of his books will end up in a happy category but they are so good and take you over. It’s like his own characters can’t hide from him, what a craft master.
Thanks so much. Nothing will keep me from reading, though.
Yes, more than I thought but at 81 I’m no spring chicken! Happy reading.
