Loved the Frozen River! My favorite book last year.
I just finished The General and Julia by Jon Clinch. I was inspired to pick it out of my stack of books after hearing an interpretive performance of Julia Dent Grant provided by the First Ladies’ Library and Museum.
I’m now reading This Time Tomorrow by Emma Straub for next month’s book discussion at our local library. There is an interesting connection between these two books: I purchased The General and Julia from the independent bookstore, Books are Magic, while visiting a friend in Brooklyn Heights. That store is owned by author Emma Straub!
I read The Elements by John Boyne. It was a masterful exploration of grief, trauma, and the impact of horrific events on people. It was very difficult to read, so if you plan to pick it up check trigger warnings. It’s full of them.
I’m close to finishing Sylvia Moreno-Garcia’s The Bewitching. I’m amazed at her ability to write across such a wide range of genres.
The Berry Pickers by Amanda Peters
Just finished Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConagy
Listening to Every precious and Fragile Thing by Barbara Davis
Reading Nightshade by Michael Connelly
Finished reading the first book in the new series by Elly Griffiths, The Frozen People. It’s an interesting mystery utilizing time travel to solve cold cases. Will try the next one when it comes out. Changing genres I started The Correspondent. Wasn’t sure I would like the format of all letters but it grabbed my interest. Alternating that with Replaceable You by Mary Roach. Fascinating study of history of creating spare or replacement parts for the human body
I am almost finished with the novel, Our London Lives, by Christine Dwyer Hickey, an Irish novelist. I picked up the novel when I was in England a few weeks ago as it was recommended by two British book bloggers. It is an engaging novel of two Irish individuals, Milly and Pip, who interact with one another sporadically over a period of 40 years in the city of London. I had not heard of the author before now but she knows how to tell a good story.
The fact it was based on a real woman was interesting to me. It had a lot of interesting characters.
I am also reading Lolita and it sounds like we are having the same reaction to it. About mid-book, his sarcastically described tour of the US was entertaining.
This week I am reading Lolita for Book Browse. It’s interesting being in the mind of a depraved man. I’m also listening to Like Lions by Brian Panowich who I saw at Bouchercon this year. So far this has been good to listen to. Characters are interesting.
Last week I read the Frozen River which, for me was slow starting, then picked up. Story line was good and the fact it was based on a real woman.
I finished listening to A Killing on the Hill by Robert Dugoni. Very entertaining. About a young reporter in the 1930’s before cell phones. Good mystery.
Based on your comments, I’ve added The Correspondent to my TBR list.
