I loved Harriet the Spy! (I read it when I was much younger, so take my opinion with a grain of salt
)
How to Read a Book by Monica Wood, which I am enjoying very much. I’m listening to My Name is Barbra, which should take me months to finish. So far I’m enjoying it, and would definitely listen to it if you are interested, as she does a great job telling her own story.
I’ve loved to read since I was a small girl (73 y/o now), but I’ve found that there are so many outstanding children’s books that I wasn’t even aware of. I’ve been using James Mustich’s 1000 Books to Read Before You Die which has quite a few on it and I’ve really enjoyed them.
Thanks for the recommendation on Who Is Government. I’ll have to pick it up. So many good people have had their lives upended when all they were doing was serving their country and fellow citizens to the best of their ability and with integrity.
Misbehaving at the Crossroads by Honoree Fanonne Jeffers
I finished Intermezzo by Sally Rooney - what a stunning book, definitely worth the five star review I left on Goodreads, subsequently watching the dramatization of her novel Normal People on Hulu. This week I am reading The Hunter’s Daughter by Nicola Solvinic from Bookbrowse.
I am reading.MURDERLAND by Caroline Fraser.
It is ostensibly about serial killers in the Pacific Northwest but is also about cartography, and geology, and-for heaven’s sake-the weather.
Isolation leads to a deep long lasting lack of compassion for the land and its peoples and still so few care . It’s frightening.
I’m reading Enemy Women by Paulette Jiles, and on the Non-Fiction side it’s The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck by Mark Manson.
I selected a “filler” book; something I read when in between others and usually “fluffier” than most; however, City of Saints and Thieves is enthralling. The setting includes the Congo, which was the setting for The Poisonwood Bible by Kingsolver. The two plots differ but both provide a glimpse into a time period of intense fighting, murder, greed and poverty for most.****
I just finished THE OTHER EMMA by Sharon Gloger Friedman - LOVED it!!
Is that by Ellen Marie Wiseman? LOVED IT, but yes…very intense.
Such a good book, but heartbreaking.
I’m reading Amity Gage’s Sea Wife and Liza Tully’s The World’s Greatest Detective and her Just Okay Assistant.
How to Read a Book is an unsung excellent read. I can’t believe it doesn’t get more attention. Hope you enjoy as much as I did.
The Subtle Art. . . is such a good read and catalyst for self reflection. Hope you enjoy.
I just finished The Women of Arlington Hall by Jane Healey. I was attracted to the story line of young women taking jobs in Washington DC in the late 1940’s, 50’s as that is what I wanted to do when fresh out of high school in '67. However, my fellow Hoosier pal backed out of leaving home, as these characters had to, last minute. I had not their courage to go it alone.
Anyway, the book and characters get more interesting as the story develops about deciphering code from Russian communications in efforts to find who stole scientific secrets enabling the Soviets to develop a nuclear bomb. Having lived thru the cold war times I enjoy reading novels based during that time period. One of the women discovers she is related to one of the suspected spies which of course complicates the story (and jeopardizes her job and possibly life) but does allow the author to add an opposing viewpoint about proprietary information which she does very well.
Anthony, Our book club read My Friends to mixed reviews. I also followed it with The Return and then also the short book A Month in Siena about the art he studied which gave him some solace during his stressful times looking for his father’s story. I do think this man is stuck in his sorrow and grief.
The Midnight Hour by Eve Chase. It’s one of those books that you read and read, trying to find out what the problem is.
I just finished the Shiloh series by Helena Sorensen yesterday - looking forward to picking out a new book today!
The Only Woman In The Room
Song f the Blue Bottle Tree
Rogue Protocol
