I’m reading Wild Dark Shore. It’s great.
Just finished reading Absolution by Alice McDermott. Will start In the Family Way by Laney Katz Becker tomorrow.
Welcome to BookBrowse, Peggy!
I’m reading “The Famine Orphans” by Patricia Falvey. Really enjoying it!
The Original by Nell Stevens. The language and overall craft are staggering. I want to use certain passages as writing prompts. So, what I’m saying is that I want to copy the book about copying.
I just finished reading Lawrence Wright’s novel, The Human Scale, which is an excellent and absorbing novel which takes place in the West Bank. Not only is the story captivating and the characters engaging, Wright gives a lot of relevant background to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Wright has covered the area for years as a journalist.
I’m reading Path Between the Seas by David McCullough in preparation for an upcoming trip. It’s a very interesting story about the creation of the Panama Canal.
I’m reading Beyond the Ghetto Gates by Michelle Cameron. It’s set in Ancona, Italy during the Napoleonic Wars, and describes the lifting of restrictions in the Jewish ghetto.
I currently listening to The Ghosts of Spain by Giles Tremlett about how the Spanish Civil War and Franco’s death squads shaped the country; and
Just Another Missing Person by Gillian McAllister.
The Offing will definately be in my top books of the year!
Loved The Original too!!
I’m currently reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn for my Library Book Club, because the next month we will read James. I’m also listening to Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall, and yes, I consider listening, reading. I am also beta reading a friends manuscript.
So many great books to check out - really enjoy checking out all the replies. I just finished reading Framed by John Grisham and Jim McCloskey. Easy in that it’s a very conversational read without getting super detailed, but the story of each person falsely accused and imprisoned are all so gut wrenching so that I found myself pausing for the rest of the day before starting the next person’s story.
It Can’t Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis. Remarkably pertinent to today!
A vintage vendetta - Camelia Woods (ARC from Hidden Gems)
The lost world - Arthur Conan Doyle (audiobook)
Consider yourself kissed - Jessica Stanley (for bookclub)
The tapestry of time - Kate Heartfield (for BookBrowse)
Our book club just finished The Phoenix Crown by Kate Quinn & Janie Chang. We are now reading The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Richardson.
I so agree, I believe it is my most favorite of the year so far!
Certainly leaves the reader with food for thought.
I have just finished reading “A Woman of No Importance” by Sonia Purnell. It’s about Virginia Hall, an American who worked as a spy to save France during World War II. I will be leading the discussion for our Women’s Club of Powell Book Group. The book was quite a lesson in courage. I need my heroes now. Virginia grew up wealthy but yearned for adventure and a sense of purpose. She was rejected by men for her disability (amputated left leg at the knee) and ignored and sabotaged by men for being a woman. She proved all her detractors wrong and helped save France from the Nazi. What a great thinker, planner, fighter, and leader!
From many I would like to read, I have decided to start Riley Sager’s “With a Vengeance.”
