Trying to finish The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan finished. Difficult to concentrate with everything going on: Election and results and some illness in the family. But will get it done.
Listening to Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin when driving. Listening because it is one of James Mustich’s 1000 Books to Read Before You Die. Definitely not what I expected, but I will finish it. Certainly can’t listen when my elementary age granddaughters are with me!
@Anne_Glasgow I echo @Lana_Maskus in being interested about the presentation and the Texas Book Festival, so please feel free to post your own topic on it! No pressure though
The festival is next weekend. I’ll try to get back here after to let you know how it went. Thanks for your interest. I recommend the book if you are at all interested in the impact of the legislative decisions on real people—and not just in Texas.
@Lana_Maskus I had trouble with The Worst Hard Time when I tried to read it several years ago. It just didn’t hold my attention well enough, and it ended up being a DNF for me.
@Anne_Glasgow I hope you like it. I thought it was a weird, wonderful read, but I also suspect it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. You can read my review here:
Great review, Kim. I think I heard Powers say in an interview that his sister gave him a book about the ocean when he was like 10 or so. I’m going to try to get to it shortly after I finish reading books for the Texas Book Festival which is next weekend. I’ve got 2 to go. Well, I have many more on my wish list but I have two in hand that I hope to finish.
I loved There Are Rivers in The Sky - tough subjects, beautifully written. Another of Shafak’s books that is an all-time fav is “The Island of Missing Trees.” Have only read three of her books but plan to go back and read her earlier work.
@Lana_Maskus LOL about Tales of the City! I watched the first few episodes of the TV show version with Laura Linney with my mom–she lived in San Francisco when she was young and loves the book/TV show. It was really sweet, also not what I was expecting! One day I will read the books too
