Was Effie’s dad right to hide the truth for so many years?
No I don’t think so. I grappled with him as a parent so his letter at the end seemed so contradictory to what I thought of him when he’d leave Effie with her siblings. In fairness, by not telling the children he maybe thought he was protecting them.
I think Effie’s dad was trying to protect his family by not telling them the truth. Effie’s dad was such a flawed character and, yet, by the end I was very sympathetic to him. Was he right in not spe the truth? I don’t think so, but I think he was trying.

I don’t think Effie’s dad was right to hide the truth. Yet I think he meant to do what was best. I don’t think he hid the truth because he was thoughtless or hurtful - just unsure of what was best for all.
Initially I suspected him of something worse, that being keeping another woman or young girl captive. Was I the only reader who thought this? He was a victim of the ruthless family, but it seems he should have told Effie the truth. Dad’s mental state was fragile.
Nan, I also suspected that Effie’s dad was keeping another woman or young girl. In the end I did not find him nefarious, but rather a broken person.
No I don’t think so, but he had his reasons I guess. Lies, even by omissions always come back to bite you
I don’t think he was right to hide the truth, either about Anya’s birth mother, his relationship with her, or his disappearances motivated by trying to find her.

There would have been a far different outcome had Cameron been truthful. Right to hide the truth - maybe nor maybe not. It effected a lot of lives either way. I dont think in the beginning he expected it to hurt so many by hiding it, and the book says before he lost his wife they were planning to tell Effie, but once she died he lost all sense of direction.
No as she was becoming an adult, she should have been told the truth. But if he had she would never have gone to Scotland, she would have searched for her mother.
Although I don’t think that it was right for him to hide the truth I do think that his heart was in the right place. He was trying to protect his family the only way he knew how. Unfortunately that decision ultimately weighed on him and he was never able to be truly at peace.
I don’t think it was right of him to hide the truth but I think he believed that he was helping everyone in the family by keeping his secret.
