War and Peace Side Read, Week 12, August 17-August 23: Book 3/Part 2

Ok so I’m posting out of order but I need to capture this thought before losing the location in the book. And I’m hoping if it catches your attention when you pass by that maybe you can help my understanding.

Vol III, Pt II, chap 19 where he is talking about the battle of Borodino. If I’m reading correctly it seems as though this is Tolstoy breaking the 4th wall and talking directly to the reading public about the staging of this particular battle and the days right around it.

I can’t recall if he has used this technique before but it seems as if maybe I can recall it from earlier. I’m curious to see if there is consensus that this is what is happening and what the purpose might be. Y’all always come up with such good answers when I get stumped.
