This is the third historical fiction novel Benedict and Murray have written together. Each has also written several novels on her own. Have you read any of their other works, and if so, how do they compare?

I read both The Personal Librarian and The First Ladies. I also read Harlem Rhapsody. I find the insights they offer as a black-white writing duo very interesting. The Personal Librarian offered a story of a black woman who chose to “pass” and to reject her family to protect her position. That loss parallels Polly’s losses to some extent. In The First Ladies, Mary McLeod Bethune was (as she was in real life) a courageous and untiring champion for justice. In this novel, Eunice shows a similar courage and determination.
