The author based this novel on the real-life Kingdom of the Happy Land. Prior to reading this novel, what did you know about the Kingdom of the Happy Land? Were you aware that such a kingdom existed?

I did not know about the Kingdom of Happy Land, or any of the other similar communities prior to reading the book. That is why I like historical fiction —- it allows me to learn about little known parts of history!

I did not and could kick myself. We lived in Greenville and would visit Saluda as well as Hendersonville and would have loved to see exactly where the inspiring story was set. I am a big fan of historical fiction.

Prior to reading this book I did not know that this was real. I did not know that this was a real place until I read the book.

I’ve heard of another community, maybe started by abolitionists. Happy Land was new to me.

I had no awareness of the Kingdom of Happy Land. That’s what so great about reading. You are constantly learning.

I had never heard of Happy Land before reading this book. I enjoyed learning more and reading about other settlements. I plan to do some additional research as well!

I had absolutely no knowledge about the Kingdom of the Happy Land before reading this book. Yet again, historical fiction has proven to be not just entertaining, but enlightening, I learn so much from reading the genre about events, people, and places I never heard about in the history classes I took.
