A Tennessee library director has been fired after she refused to relocate more than 100 LGBTQ±themed children’s titles to the library system’s adult section.
This case is both infuriating and so sad. I can’t believe that librarians are having to stand on the front line and face down the public and their boards or councils, often with little or no support.
HR 7661 is moving through Congress and has the potential to have a big impact on library collections in both school and public libraries. It’s time to speak with legislators in both House and Senate about defeating this bill. Everylibrary.org is a great source for more information. Yes, librarians ARE on the front lines and bear the responsibility of determining what age-appropriate materials should be cataloged for adults and separated for children. Book banning is wrong, but keeping explicit materials from young children is necessary.
