I agree. You wrote an excellent synopsis of Amanda Skenandore’s book When No One Else Will. I hope others will read your review so they will understand the book’s value.
I loved this book and found it hard to put down. I would recommend this to all women. It’s good for all to know the struggles women have gone through.
Excellent historical fiction! I hope that the topic would raise questions about how women were treated in past decades as well as heighten the need for these services today.
I found the book to be both emotionally powerful and thought-provoking, highlighting the realities of women’s vulnerability and the limited control they often had over their lives. I appreciated how honestly it portrayed the impact of poverty, social expectations, and judgment, without romanticizing the past. What stood out most to me was how women were expected to carry immense burdens in silence, while the larger societal forces behind their struggles were often ignored. The story felt deeply relevant even today.
I really enjoyed this book. I thought Mimi’s character was well-developed and abortion remains an important topic/issue today.
For me, this was a 5 star read! For any number of reasons. First the topic. Very timely with Roe v Wade being overturned. Second, we need to learn from our past. We need these stories! The history was well researched and presented. Third, we need these discussions! We need to talk about abortion and the back alley. Women will continue to seek abortion. Fourth, we need to take action. This book reinforced our loss of autonomy over our bodies. We are returning to the past! For those of us with daughters…the future is dim. Not only with abortion but birth control in general. What will women lose next?
