Overall, what did you think of In Our Midst? (no spoilers, please!)

This book was sad and disheartening, but it was important and certainly worth reading. I can’t stop thinking about it.

I liked In Our Midst and thought the writing was excellent. At the same time, the book infuriated me that thousands of people could have their lives ruined and be imprisoned on very little or no evidence. I wish this book had gotten more press when it was published (2020). This would be an excellent choice for book clubs, especially with the issues around immigration in this country today.

The book is clearly timely. History has shown that the United States periodically ostracize people to assuage their own insecurities and fears, e.g., incarceration/deportations of chinese, mexicans, muslim, japanese, germans. We will be seeing it again. It is a sad but real situation and, I believe, it will continue to happen. This book was candid and realistic. The author did a good job at presenting the situation realistically.

It’s a very well written novel about a lesser known or talked about effects of wars and how it affects the ordinary people.

In our Midst is interesting historical fiction. I rated it 3/5. Somehow the book managed to illicit a very mild emotional response. The bar is really high for Holocaust/ WWII fiction as there are so many novels on this topic. I think there were too many characters?
