Loved Riding the Iron Rooster. I read it when I was living in Taipei.

I find non-fiction harder to recommend than fiction because NF is much more dependent on what people are interested in. So, these recommendations depend on readers being interested in the subject matter. They were all fantastic!

Madame Restell by Jennifer Wright (about a flamboyantly wealthy 19th century abortionist)

Gathering Moss by Robin Wall Kimmerer (a beautifully written book about the science of moss, mixed with a little personal anecdote, plus plenty of Indigenous wisdom and legends)

Southern Lady, Yankee Spy by Elizabeth Varon (about the badass Elizabeth Van Lew, a Unionist spymaster who lived in Richmond while it was the Confederate capital)
