Mebel discovers that cooking provides a “sense of peace” and that it calms “the usual cacophony of noises” in her mind. (p. 107). Does this ring true for you? Are there activities you engage in that clear your head in a similar manner?

I can relate to the quiet that her mind is able to achieve with a task that busies the hands and engages the mind. I achieve the same with embroidery, knitting or crocheting.

Books have always been my happy place where I escape when life is too loud. As a child I cocooned with a book up a tree, hidden under a table , with a flashlight in bed, any private nook I could create in the midst of my large, extroverted Italian family.
