I follow similar rabbit trails if I’m interested but that usually seems more relevant when I’m reading nonfiction and I want to flesh out something mentioned or something I don’t understand.
Me, too! It feels odd for me to not read before going to sleep, even if it’s just a few pages, like you wrote.
Not sure it’s a quirk, but I keep a database of the books I’ve read. I start a fresh file every January and have columns for title, author, dates read, ISBN, publisher, grade rating (A+ to F-), etc.
I sometimes skip introductions to just get right to the story and avoid any potential spoilers.
I read samples (if available) before committing a book to my TBR list, and give books a trial run of about 50 pages or 10-20%.
I usually read right before hitting the hay, but if a book is due soon, or if it’s really enjoyable, I’ll read at any spare moment. I just need peace and quiet though.
@Lisa_B3 Yes! I have that database too. I have a list of everything I have read since 1991. I originally started keeping track because I was buying a lot of books and didn’t want to repurchase something I had already read.
I love this question. And now, I seem very dull in my approach to reading.
Not quirk-less but you all are so much more interesting! Whenever possible I like to have at least two formats of a book (usually an audiobook and ebook) on hand before I read a book. At the end of every reading year, I write reading five reading objectives for the following year in order to push myself beyond my sandbox. And, I have a beautiful leather journal where I note what I read, ratings, formats, and random thoughts. I do love bookmarks but they seem to find me without me trying to collect them. In the past, when paper airline boarding passes were more common and I read physical books, it was common to find them in-between pages, great reminders of where I was when I read the book.
Great answer @Gabi_J. I feel like my only reading objective should be to read what I already own! When I want to push myself in new areas I will sometimes join a reading challenge. Inevitably I end up a little bored with it as a process. I feel like I’m pretty good at reaching out for different kinds of reads.
Yes, I have tried and enjoyed a few challenges in the past but I also get bored after awhile.
