In the prologue of The Moonshine Women, the premature baby is supposed be—according to an array of old wives’ tale tests and superstitions—a boy. When a disappointed Hiram Strong holds his third daughter in his hands instead, he christens her “Jace,” which means “the Lord is salvation” and declares that she will save the family. Does she?

I think she does literally and figuratively. After Alta dies, Shine gives the family hope and a reason to carry on. As an adult, she is the brains behind the moonshine business, and of course later saves the family as she works to pay back their moonshine loss.

She continues the family after her mother dies, continues with the family business after Jiram’s death and pays back the bar in Hot Springs for their financial up-front contribution , yes, butt her sisters also make a substanial contribution after it is discovered that Shine is not Hiram;s child biologically. They insist she is still part of the family, and that the concept of family is broader than like parentage.

Shine had the gumption and drive to succeed. Her older sisters were waiting for her to forge ahead and save the business with her “shine savy!”

Yes she did save them. I think somehow Hiram knew she would be the one to carry on the family tradition. He knew she would be different than his older daughters.

If she didn’t actually “save” the Strong family, she was certainly the catalyst and was often the one who came to everyone else’s rescue. And, of course, she wasn’t even a Strong by blood, though no one knew that bur Lidy for some time. I appreciated that little twist.

She did so much to save the family. She made tough decisions and folowed through to help her family members, seek justice and stay strong in her convictons.

Absolutely she did! She was the strongest and had the most spunk and determination of the three girls. She was able to make money for Rebeccas medical care along with keeping herself and others afloat in Hot Springs… she made very tough decisions and stayed true to her convictions to keep the Strong family going amidst all of their tragedies.

Shine is certainly the one who endures what she has to in order to ensure her family survives. She is smart, resourceful and quick on her feet. She’s the one who takes the lead when things go sideways.

I think Hiram may have been disappointed ,at first but it seems to me she became the apple of his eye. I love how they ended up sharing the closeness of father/ daughter and the making of moonshine. She really took to it. Yes, I feel she helped keep the family together. She not only had A good head on her shoulders, especially for the business side, but she was strong emotionally and I think she took after her grandmother in that sense.

Shine saves the family and eventually assumes the matriarchy of the family. The youngest took special care of their family’s legacy.

I do think Shine saves her family in many ways. First, it was her continence of the moonshining occupation after Hiram is killed. Then she problem solved using Jed’s car to sell the product. When Rebecca was seriously injured she worked as a bartender to pay the hospital bills. She returned to her family after her escape from the Southern Club and worked hard with making their little farm profitable.

Yes, she is literally the light of hope and ideas that “shines” the way forward. The name is perfect.
