I always read at night before going to sleep on my kindle app on my iPad. Did you know this app tracks the days and weeks read in a row? I’ve read over 1900 days and 360 weeks in a row. It’s become an obsession I fear. Several days a week I read in the afternoon in a book format. And if I have to drive alone more than half an hour it’s time for an aud book. I do live alone so that gives me more time to read. Any place works for reading.
My husband has that same addiction, @Melinda_J! He could be dead-dog tired but he’s bound and determined to keep his streak alive. I admit I like seeing the numbers, too, but I try not to get too wrapped up in them.
Do you mean Cancer Ward by Solzehnitsyn? I admire your completing it in one sitting. It’s a long book!
I have read for 8-10 hours straight at times, but it’s usually 1-2 hours at a time in the afternoon and in bed before sleep. As I’ve gotten older though, I find myself dozing off which is so annoying. It’s not necessarily a favorite place, but I do most of my reading sitting up on my bed. I wish I had a truly comfortable, enjoyable place to read and envy anyone who does.
@Lana_Maskus yeah, me too! It’s very annoying. I used to be able to read all night long if I wanted to. Not so much anymore.
Ooops!
Yes, Cancer Ward by
Solzhenitsyn, not Dostoyevsky. My error, thanks for catching that. And I will confess that I did sleep a bit in between readings. It was a college extra credit challenge and I became totally engrossed. And you are right, it IS a long book! In all honesty, it took two days of reading to complete it.
Your various reading locations sound idyllic, especially in a lounge chair in the backyard! I will say, however, that I am one of those people who reserves the bedroom for sleeping. I’ve never gotten into the habit of reading in bed because I either fall immediately to sleep or can’t get comfortable enough to continue reading. Thank goodness there are so many other options. Thank you for sharing yours.
lol - An obsession for me, too. I have decided to break the streak and FREE myself at 3 years, a few days away. Let’s see if I do.![]()
My usual reading time is late evening, just before going to sleep, which is around 11pm. I read for another hour, sometimes 2, and once in a rare while 3. If the book is really captivating, I’ll read a little more over breakfast. If I am using audible, or Libby (library audible version), I read while I am doing tasks that don’t require much attention - like weeding the garden, etc. In those cases I can go for a several hours at a time. Between Audible, Libby, Kindle, and hand-held books, I am at a count of 41 books completed since Jan 1, 2025.
Now that I have landed in the world of retirement, I read whenever the urge gets me. An avid reader since childhood, I can’t imagine not having at least 2 and at times even 3 books going at the same time, (One hard copy, one on Kindle and one on tape) I love words and so enjoy reading reviews. Really love being able to not only particate in my in person clubs but am having a good time with Book Browse newly established online clubs. Good job Book Browse,
Before my cataract surgery, I tired of reading quickly and would only read maybe 30 minutes per day. I would almost always depend on my Audible and Kindle apps so I could listen for a few hours and then find my place easily on my Kindle. I now have new eyes (!) after both cataracts removed and I read for hours at a time. How glorious!!!
Congrats, @Christine_Schaefer! Many people I know have had cataract surgery and have reported that it’s been life-changing. That’s awesome!
I’m getting older…not quite old yet at 72!!! I read in my recliner. In the winter, I have a favorite quilt that I put over me and then read until I doze off. Very cozy when I read. When I listen through Audible or library tape, then..not so cozy.
Good to know! I’ve often used my average time spent reading as an indicator of when I need my eyes checked. If books are making me restless, my glasses need updating.
Since childhood, so many years ago, I have been able to read anywhere, at any time or place. Now that I retired, I usually read while having my morning coffee, and later in the evening before going to bed. I am very much a night owl, so that gives me many hours of reading pleasure. If I find the book grabbing my soul, I will often find myself in my recliner or on the deck deep in its pages. i read both good old fashioned books and on my Kindle. Since retirement, I am not listening to as many books, however, whenever I travel with my daughter to Washington, we choose two books, one each way. I must admit that I often nod off and find that I have missed a crucial part of the book. I guess there is a difference between an hour or two driving to work and 12 hours directly north.
When I was in grade school, during the summers, my pals and I would hit the ground running after breakfast and play until afternoon and then we’d dine on fresh lemonade until supper and sit in my friend’s breezeway relaxing in adirondack chairs and read all afternoon. Each summer we read between fifty and a hundred books and it was just as much an integral part of our lives as building tree houses, looking for snakes and salamanders, riding our bikes, exploring old run down barns, swinging on swings, baseball, tennis, and jacks. All of it together made for glorious summers.
I’ve had the good fortune to be without reading glasses my entire life. Maybe that’s why there no yellow or red lights when I pick up a book, it’s just green for go until . . .
