Hadley and Elke clearly had a deep bond. with Hadley describing Elke as her “best friend.” Do you think it’s possible to have a “best friend” who is seventy years your senior?
We are all attracted to a certain person for a different reason. These two shared a bond and cared for one another. When choosing your best friend age should not be a consideration.
Absolutely! I think it’s possible to have a best friend no matter what the age gap may be. It’s all about connecting with another person and that could change over time depending on the circumstances of one’s life and the choices we make. I enjoyed that part of the story very much.
Yes, age pays too difference, Its the bond between two people that matters. I think you can have a best friend as young or as old as you want. Its the connection made, isn’t it??
Friendships are about connecting. Elders are important pillars who share wisdom. People who have a younger or elder friend are fortunate.
age doesn’t matter. friendship and bonding to another person is all about how that person makes you feel
Absolutely! I think we should throw away the notion that your friends can only be the same age that you are. I’ve tried to have friends of all ages throughout my life. A bond is a bond for whatever the reason.
Yes, why not. Your best friends are sometimes your best teachers and advocates, so why not have a best friend from an older generation?
I have friends that are much older than me and I love hearing their point of views on things since they have experienced more. I definitely think there’s a lot of benefits and things to learn from the older and younger generations.
It certainly can happen but in the real world it’s not common. Perhaps that’s why their friendship was so special.
I certainly think that it is possible to have a best friend who is so much older. Hadley had also gone through so much at such a young age that it probably was not relatable for most of her peers. She needed a stable force with decades of life experience to be there for support, friendship, and guidance.
Yes,age is just a number. If there is respect, companionship, mutual interests and fondness, why not.
Mutual interests and mutual worldviews weigh more than mutual age. Elke’s interests in Victorian memento mori and her didactic statements like :“There is never anything rational about love.” settle the young Hadley. Hadley has an anchor in Elke ,
plus she is fun. Imagine planning your own afterlife glam shot! And playing at naming the supposed corpses together like they were dolls!
Yes, I agree it is possible, but not common. Friendships are built upon mutual interests, complementary dispositions and a similar world view. Such friendships are not common because it is not often that people of other generations are able to interact and get to know each other.
Yes, I do believe friendship can cross age differences, it is the connection that counts. But as Jean_M says, there must be an opportunity to meet and often we stay within our own generation. I belong to a book club, and almost everyone is younger than me and it has been a blast. I feel that I learn so much and I enjoy learning new perspectives.
Yes, it is possible especially since women are living longer. Who wouldn’t want a young person around to keep you on your toes with current events as well as someone who can help you once in awhile. Conversely, think of all a younger person can learn from someone who has lived a long life and perhaps feeling joy at being happy to assist if needed.
Absolutely. Finding people who suit you isn’t tied to age. It’s about recognizing the similarities between you and embracing those commonalities and passion. They bonded over photography and art. It makes perfect sense.
Definitely! Friendship can transcend age differences and other differences too, across genders, cultures, nationalities, etc.
While never quite that large of an age gap, I’ve had some really close elderly friends and they were such joys. Multigenerational friendships are so meaningful.
Yes. A lot of my closest friends now are 20 years younger than I am. I’m 61 and have worked with some 40-year-olds that I’m very close to.
