Edmund and Edith are twins and clearly very close. Do you think they have an unusual relationship for the time period they live in?
Maybe since they shared both traumatic family events and that they were both gay their relationship was tighter than others. Having older sisters who were twins (one is deceased) I don’t think they had an unusually closer relationship. Of course, there was the time they told me they couldn’t play with me as they were more closely related to each other than they were to me. A very young and tearful me recalls asking Mom if this was true. Not knowing the context, Mom said, “Yes.” ![]()
I have read that twins to have a certain relationship with each others. And not having any close contact with twins, I really can not either confirm or deny this question.
As a mother of twins there is a definite link, I believe. I thought more could have been made of Minnie and Molly’s being identical. Edith & Edmund were fraternal, different genders, but still a stronger bond than regular siblings.
twins have a link with one another, but Edmund and Edith did seem very strong but that could have come from the traumatic family events
I think the brother/sister/twin relationship that Edmund and Edith shared was beautiful They protected each other’s secrets. Edmund also protected Edith physically. I don’t think that their relationship is unusual relationship for this time period at all.
I think the fact they were twins and the sole survivors of a tragedy created their bond. I would like to think it wasn’t unnatural to be close to a sibling, even in Victorian times.
I don’t think you need to be a twin to have a special and close relationship with a sibling of the opposite gender. My brother and I were very close and we were seven years apart. I think sometimes personalities just connect in a special way. That was true for me and my brother. The fact that Edmund and Edith are both survivors of a family tragedy, as well as twins, certainly could, and likely did, add to that close connection.
I have twins in my family, and they do have an especially strong relationship. I wonder if some of that just happens because they are the same age, so they often experience things at the same time encouraging a closer bind.
