Did the book have an overriding “message”? If so, what was it?
Yes, i think this was a story about social injustice and that differences don’t necessarily need to divide us. James and Allison came from different races, social classes, and sexes but they came together because both could look beyond these to see the person within the body and connect to being humans just trying to be the best they could be.
Systems of injustice in the United States need reforming. Life isn’t fair. Things can change in an instant. Help who you can.
The injustices of our prison systems. Life is NOT fair, differences do not need to divide us.
Some injustices need to be rectified regardless of the methods. Sometimes the results are successful.
I agree with those who responded about injustice. I did find this book had me thinking quite a bit about social injustice. It made me more aware that sometimes we just need to take a stand to help make things better for someone else.
Social injustice an happen in a variety of situations. The way one copes with it in a positive manner is the important aspect. Instead of being negative about the injustice it is important to be proactive in changing things for the future. We have many examples of this. What about the human rights efforts, changing the woman’s status to being a voting member of our society, gay marriage, etc. The change that happened in each and every situation occurred due to people taking a stand and working through many channels to make it happen.
The book certainly has minor themes about the prison system and how people can evolve along with giving grace. I believe the main theme was an awareness about social injustice, which for me is what is our social economic status, race, sexual orientation, and culture. These are all things that not within our control but alter our lives in so many ways.
I agree with all your comments. For me, Social injustice was very apparent in the novel.
