BookBrowsers ask Peggy Townsend, author of The Botanist's Assistant

You wrote a sequel to See Her RunThe Thin Edge - but then didn’t continue with the character, Aloa Snow. Why did you decide to go in a different direction?

Hi, Peggy. Clearly you love, love Margaret! How does she continue to develop in your creative mind? I would imagine you want her to live forever. In the publishing world, is that realistic? Could “she” ever morph into another character in a story - different setting, maybe a mystery, etc.? Perhaps Margaret has a long lost sister somewhere waiting to emerge!

@NanK You’re right. I do love Margaret. Sometimes I have to remind myself that she’s a product of my imagination and not someone I’m friends with. I’d love her to live forever, as you say, but in the publishing world, sequels are hard-won. Readers may love a book and, even an editor might love it but unless there are sales, the sequel won’t happen. That’s the cold, hard truth of publishing. As for Margaret morphing into another character, I’m not sure I could make that happen. She’s such a part of my world. But, what a great and creative question! Thanks for asking.

Yes, tonight is my reading and launch event at Bookshop Santa Cruz. In fact, I’m getting ready right now to practice my talk for the fourth time. Launch parties are hectic and fun and, luckily, I have my family to help me. I’ve got the wine and sparkling water packed, along with cookies and goldfish crackers for snacks. I’ve got fancy cups for refreshments and cute holders for the treats along with flowers and pretty purple pens that say, “The Botanist’s Assistant by Peggy Townsend” on them. Most of all, I’m looking forward to seeing friends and neighbors and colleagues who have been kind enough to support me on this. It’s always an exciting night.

Make fun and treasured memories!

I hope you had a wonderful time at the launch party, Peggy!

You mentioned The Rough Drafts in your intro here and in the Acknowledgments at the end of The Botanist’s Assistant. Were any of them able to attend last night?

I’m curious about the group. Can you tell us more? (How long you’ve been together, how many people are members, how you support each other, etc.)
