1000 Books side read information

I’m interested and will try to read monthly books as best as I can keeping up with life.

Hi folks - My sincerest apologies, but I misled you on Portrait of a Lady by Henry James. I’m not sure where I was looking before, but in scheduling it for myself last night I found out it’s 600-700 pp, depending on the edition. Oops! That’s w-a-a-a-y over the limit we discussed. So do you want to:

  • Go ahead with Portrait of a Lady. It’s long, but I can still do it.
  • Let’s pick something else that’s shorter this time around. Please submit five new books.
  • Move the March book - Liar’s Poker - to February and pick something else for March.
  • Other (reply with other suggestions)
  • Don’t care, whatever the group decides is fine with me.

Again, really sorry about that.

As usual I missed your message. I also have downloaded that book on my kindle. Sounds very intriguing! Am I too late to be included?

Hi @Lynne_G - This is open to everyone! We’d love to have you join us.

Those participating rotate picking books. They offer up five titles, and anyone else who wants to join in the discussion is absolutely welcome. The discussions open up on the 1st of the following month, so for January we picked A Visit From the Goon Squad, which we’ll start discussion on February 1. We picked a really odd book for March: a nonfiction book titled Liar’s Poker. The book chosen for February is Portrait of a Lady, but I think that’s likely to change, as it’s much longer than I thought it was and we spoke about limiting selections to 350 pp for now.

Thanks Kim. I’ll do my best to keep up and look for the information on the books to read.
I’ll pass on January’s book and I have already downloaded *Liar’s Poker. I’ll wait to hear what the group decides on February’s Portrait of a Lady.

Hey, @Cathryn_Conroy, @Gabi_J, and @Lana_Maskus - Let me know if you have any preference on how to handle this. If I don’t hear from you in the next day or so, I’ll post another five books to pick from.

Go for it! I have finished A Visit From the Goon Squad and will begin A Portrait of a Lady today.

I completed the survey you sent out. Whatever is decided is fine with me.

Hi @Cathryn_Conroy - I’m sorry, but I know that for me in particular a book this long isn’t going to work for me right now. Since you’re in the minority of those who care, I’m going to table this one. I’m really sorry, and hope you haven’t started it yet.

@Gabi_J, @Lana_Maskus, @Lynne_G and @NanK (and @Cathryn_Conroy too!) Please look for a new set of five books shortly. It’ll be under the “What should we read in February” thread.

Again, my apologies for the confusion. I’m blaming Google’s AI.

Also, I found this buried in the “What should we read for March” thread. Copying it here so it’s easier to find. This list was very helpfully posted by @Lana_Maskus some time back. (Thanks, Lana!!)

Fine with me!

P.S. Blaming Google AI is genius. I may blame everything on that. Ha!

Maybe I missed a post about it, but just wondering how we are going to the side read discussion?

Hi @Lana_Maskus! I’ll be opening the discussion thread for A Visit to the Goon Squad tomorrow (February 1).

After that, well, it’s kind of an experiment. Those of us participating post thoughts and questions about the book, and in theory some sort of discussion will result.
